Strong showing by ABC at Castle Semple Regatta

ABC put in a strong showing at Castle Semple Regatta on the 1st of June 2013, where a larger than normal contingent from up north were treated to a true demonstration of three seasons in one day – it was sunny, overcast and raining by turns, but consistently windy throughout the day!

There were four wins, three second places and two third places achieved in the largest overall entry this regatta has ever seen. From a stronger showing by the boys last year, the girls came back fighting in 2013 – taking Women’s Restricted 2 4+ (the combination of Fiona Wark, Stephanie Fraser, Heather Buchanan and Sandie Pirie, coxed by Matthew Burnett, giving the new women’s boat its maiden win for ABC), Women’s R2 8+ (Ania Strachan, Kerryn Meston, Louise MacKenzie-Cooke, Lisa Glover, Heather Buchanan, Stephanie Fraser, Sam Leeman and Heather McDonald, coxed again by Matthew Burnett) and second place in Women’s Novice 4+ (Fiona Cruickshank, Lauren Cammaert (AUBC), Emma Crossan and Katherine Keddie, coxed by David Webster).

Of particular note is that ABC crews filled the top three places in Women’s Restricted 2 Coxed Fours, beating Glasgow Rowing Club and ASRA into 4th and 5th places respectively and winning Matthew Burnett the first of his three medals from the day (the other two were for coxing Women’s R2 8+ and rowing in a Generation Double with Richard Mathieson).

Well done to everyone who travelled south and competed in what were, unquestionably, very challenging conditions – there was some excellent racing, and some crews showing real promise in the run up to the Scottish Championships on the 15th and 16th of June.
